SAN SEBASTIAN, SPAIN- For the 7th year in a row, 24 of the world s best surfers from around the globe will transcend onto the Basque shores of San Sebastian, Spain for the annual Nixon Surf Challenge. Considered by new and past attendees alike to be a favorite event of the year, San Sebastian offers up some of the funnest waves in Europe.

This three-day, surfer lead and judged event is a far cry from traditional contests that put all importance on points and rankings. The Surf Challenge, at Playa de la Zurriola, leaves the judging to the invited riders and allows those who compete to put an emphasis on style and free surfing, both of which are heavily encouraged. Even with a 10,000 euro purse, what comes out of three days of this loosely structured, peer judged surfing is a refreshing change from the normal grind and high stress of other competitions.
Situated near the Spanish/French boarder, with its picturesque mountains, historical architecture and natural beaches serving as the backdrop to this invitational contest, San Sebastian is understandably one of Europe s favorite beach playgrounds and is the reason that the contest is a favorite stop for many of the invited riders.

This highly anticipated event is one that is well received by the locals of the city who have in years past, offered up their time and local knowledge to take those invited to The Surf Challenge to tucked away cider houses, hidden tapas bars and to experience San Sebastian in a way that only a long time resident normally would. It s with this kind of gratitude that makes this seaside city with urban and traditional appeal the home of The Nixon Surf Challenge year-after-year.
